Toletum


So of course this is a Roman town. I expect it is a pre-Roman town, all things considered. The natural defensive position of the hills above the Tajo gorge are impressive. But the Romans gave it its name, and they left a few things. I have already alluded to the Roman walls, and discussed the ruins under the Mezquita de la Luz. Here is a picture of the Roman Circus. It was actually quite a large circus, not quite the Circus Maximus, but not that far off, at least as far as the track went.

Interestingly, the Circus was used as a Muslim graveyard from the ninth century onwards. It continued to be the principal Mudejar (Muslims under Christian rule) cemetary into the thirteenth century. Below are some Mudejar tombs built into the Circus.
